Recorders Guide
What To Look
For!
If you decide to roll with a digital
workstation you will not be by yourself. My first hard disk
audio recorder was a Korg D-16 and then I traded that a couple
of years later for the touch screen D1600.
They are so portable and you will love the
professional results you get with them. Usher recorded almost
an entire album on two Roland VS-2400 series…I know you
remember that and Alicia Keys rocks the Roland VS-2400’s on her
tours.
The power from a digital recorder is incredible
you can place an entire project studio right on your tabletop.
It doesn’t matter if you are a complete band, writer, producer,
singer or rapper. The recorder will bring out the best in you
at the drop of a dime.
When you look for a DR make sure that it has at
least 16 tracks with the capability of track bouncing this way
you will have many tracks to lay it down. You want one that
supports 16 or 24bit recording with up to 8 tracks of
simultaneous recording.
If you have the money make sure you have a
minimum of 40GB of hard drive space. This will give you plenty
of room to create many albums worth of material. Whether you’re
miking up a drum kit or recording a vocal group you will
appreciate it more if you have at least 8 XLR/TRS inputs with
phantom power. You also want a S/PDIF to stay in a digital
world all day long if you so choose.
There are plenty of digital recorders to choose
from so I have provided a list of the major players. Enjoy!
